Okay, so this is how big a radio nerd I am.
Tomorrow WTOB AM 1380 in Winston-Salem, NC returns to the airwaves. It will operate with LIVE on air talent and the format will be Top 40 Hits 1950s-1970s, including Oldies, Beach music and Motown classics.
Kids, I haven’t heard AM radio in this format since I was a child in the 1970s. I am, in a word, STOKED. They will stream online as well.
Believe it or not, there was a time when you could tune in to your town’s radio station, get the local news, state and national headlines, learn of events in the community AND get the rundown on what the kids will eat for lunch in the school system that week. And later in the afternoon, you could hear readings of the local newspaper’s obituary pages (sponsored by the funeral home, naturally). Real live DJs and on air talent who lived in your community. This is what radio is supposed to be. Live broadcasts that serve the local community, original programming. Not canned crap from 3 states away playing the same, lame 8 songs.
Here’s the station info and Wiki page
P.S. They are even going to use authentic station ID messages from their archives. Squeee!
